One of my deep and forever loves is electro, so when I come across an electro release that REALLY grabs me, I can’t help but tell everyone about it. In what Discogs tells me seems to be a first release, Italian producer D3070, evidently named after a brand of flamethrower, serves up an appropriately sizzling EP of electro sounds with a little bit of dirt rubbed into it that hits several different vibes and tickles the brain throughout.
“Booster” starts the EP off like a rocket with a funk guitar riff intro that veers right into razor sharp beats, distorted cowbells, and a rolling acidic bassline, but this EP goes a step further than just DJ material. The trippy noise swirls and lush pads of “Voyager 1” sound exactly like the space trip you would expect from the name, and “New Era” speeds things up a bit while two gorgeous synth lines dance off each other in similar intergalactic bliss.
The standout track for me is “Deep Impact”, a slow, woozy jam that feels like The Cure crashed their car into an ’80s science fiction movie synth soundtrack. This one hits all the right spots, melting from a distorted wandering pad into a discordant haunting melody that scrapes along your spine like the fear response of exploring a derelict ghost space freighter.
For better or for worse, modern electro does frequently tend to rely on samey sounding old sonic tropes. D3070’s fantastic debut manages to dabble in them all and still comes out sounding fresh, interesting, and worth many repeat listens.
